DOC TALK

May 2009:

As I wrote last month, the dolphin should be arriving. Well they have. Dad always said when you see the butterflies and moths flying on the water it's time to go fishing.

Capt Russ called me around the 10th of April, "Your sign is here" Unfortunately, weather keep me from getting out until the end of the month. The Big Game had hung a limit of Dolphin 3 times that it ventured out. The fish have been scattered, but there are plenty of gaffer size fish. When I fished, there was scattered weeds and few wind blown lines. The current was only moving at @ 2knots. We fished both in and out, and kept moving north. I had to be at a track meet that evening so we only fished a half a day. 22 gaffers and 2 sails. I took my nephew along. What a great day for him. He caught the two sails (his first) and most of the dolphin.

On that trip, we used nakeds with teasers. I have a set of 25LTD's that I bought new with matching rods in 1994 when my boys were young. What a blast to catch 20-30# dolphin on that tackle. I see too many guys pushing offshore with 50's and heavy leader and swivels. Here is a Big Game tip: use the smallest tackle you can.(*I even keep 2 LTD 10's with me) It's more fun, improves your fishing skills, and it might increase your strikes.

See you on the weed lines in May!

April 2009:

Fishing has been great between the fronts. The "Big Game" has drawn crowds at the picture board the last 3 tuna trips we have made. On Capt Russ last trip he was back in by 3:30pm with a limit of yellow fin!

Speaking of tuna fishing let me give you a tip. We were fishing in an active area with some other boats fishing as well. They were fishing the birds, we were fishing the fish. What do I mean? They were where the birds were, but upstream about 1/4 mile was where the large school of tuna were working about 100ft down. Always turn on your sounder when you find the birds. In this case, we would run up stream about 1/2 mile, troll our spread thru the fish and when we came by the other boats we had multiples. We saw them catch 3-4 fish in 2 hours, but we had a limit in that time. Fish with your sounder on...you increase your opportunities.

What is fun right now is with the wind is to kite fish for tuna. You should see a big yellow fin explode out of the water chasing the Big Game "Yummy". Russ and Jerry have really perfected this sport. Bring your movie camera, it's better than any fishing show you have seen on the cable.

I had one good Cobia day with my son Caleb during spring break. We caught a limit with Capt Russ and Jerry. No, I did not break the record, but the 45 pounder gave me good fight on light tackle. It was fine eating. My neighbor fed the Winter Park High School Water Polo team at a cook out with our good days catch.

April brings some of our best fishing. The bottom is improving, the dolphin will start to arrive and the Tuna are migrating into our range. Come join us on the water.

Happy Easter

February 2009:
The bait is plentiful and we have found the snapper and grouper at the 21 and 27 fathom ledges. We had a few charters limit out this last week of February. See new pics of Bill Kirtley trip.

The Cobia are not in yet, the water is still too cold in shore, but it should be soon. My goal is to beat our boat record of 72# this year!

The BigGame is running great. Prices are down right now with the fuel holding steady. Book your trip with Captain Russ . The Bottom is turning on, Dolphin are coming in April and May and of course, weather permitting I will be on the otherside on the 1st of April.

May 2008:
May has been an up and down month for the Big Game. We have had endure some winds and missed some days. Captain Russell and Jerry have had some awesome 'otherside' catches with the "Yummy" It's quite a show. We learned about it when we took the Big Game to the Outer Banks, NC last July. Russ and Jerry perfected the technique and have adapted it to our fishery. If the big tuna are there, they can't resist the Yummy. Book a trip and you will never forget seeing a 90# yellowfin in flight attacking the bait!

Big Game has fished a few tournaments in May. We took third place Red Snapper at the CFOA and just missed 3rd place in the slam (missed by 1#) at the FSFA. Congrats to Bloodstream 2 fishing team in their win at the FSFA on May 31. We are off to Bahamas for a week in June. It's always a deep drop feast. 7 boats from CC are joining us at Green Turtle. Jimmy Dean will be cooking the catch of the day on the dock! If you would like to charter a trip to the Islands, give Captain Russ a call. We have spent many weeks there and know the fishing well in that area. You will never forget the emerald waters, fantastic diving and of course the great fishing.

April 2008:
" I hope you have a trip planned. Between these weak cold fronts is the time to fish for Big Dolphin. Captain Russ has been catching a box full of gaffers from about the 40- 60 mile mark. We have weighed 3 fish in the 60 's this month. Each trip, we have seen action from Bulls like the one Ben Bishop fought on the "BigGame".
